Changes in the SANC Regulations

Listed below, in reverse chronological order, are all changes in the regulations of South African Nursing Council since July 2001.  The list contains both new regulations and amendments to existing regulations.

Notice relating to the creation of Categories of Practitioners in terms of section 31(2) of the Nursing Act, 2005

This notice established the following category of practitioners:

Nurse Specialist; and

Midwife Specialist.

Regulations relating to the Approval of and the Minimum Requirements for the Education and Training of a Learner Leading to Registration in the Category Auxiliary Nurse

These are totally new regulations relating to the course leading to registration in the category Auxiliary Nurse.

Regulations regarding Fees and Fines payable to the South African Nursing Council

These are totally new regulations relating to the Fees and Fines payable to the Council as prescribed in the Nursing Act, 2005 and the various regulations made in terms of the Act.

These regulations also repeal the regulations indicated in the table below -

Regulations relating to the Particulars to be Furnished to the Council for Keeping of the Register for Nursing Practitioners, the Manner of Effecting Alterations to the Register, and Certificates that may be Issued by the Council

This notice established the transitional arrangements category of practitioners:

staff nurse (enrolled nursing).

These are totally new regulations relating to the keeping of the Register.  In future there will be one unified register for qualified nurses instead of the separate registers and rolls for different categories.

These regulations also repeal the regulations indicated in the table below -

Regulations relating to performance of Community Service

These are totally new regulations relating to performance of Community Service by South African citizens intending to register for the first time as Professional Nurse.

Regulations Relating to Examinations of the South African Nursing Council: Amendment

(Government Notice No. R. 7 of 8 January 1993)

The exam fee for both basic and post-basic papers has been increased to R125,40 (including 14% VAT).
The late entry fee has been increased to R63,00 (including 14% VAT).
The fee to remark an exam script has been increased to R250,00 (including 14% VAT).

Regulations for the Investigation of Alleged Misconduct and the Conduct of Inquiries: Amendment

The accused in professional conduct proceedings now has the option to be represented by a professional association or labour organization during the proceedings instead of the usual counsel or attorney - provided that the registrar is informed in writing of the name of any such representative.
